Samsung Galaxy TabPro S is a 12-inch ‘premium tablet’ that runs Windows 10

$

The Galaxy TabPro S, which leaked earlier today, has been officially unveiled by Samsung at CES 2016. The TabPro S is similar to Microsoft’s Surface lineup of tablet-cum-laptops and runs a full version of Windows 10 with a 6th Gen. Intel Core M processor under the hood.

Like the Surface, the TabPro S comes with a keyboard accessory that can be connected to the tablet to turn into a laptop, with the ability to use the keyboard in both landscape and portrait orientation of the display. The display itself is a 12-inch Super AMOLED unit – it’s the first Windows 10 tablet with a Super AMOLED display, and the tablet is also the first with LTE Cat 6 support to run Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system.

The display resolution is 2160×1440 pixels, putting it right in the “Retina” category (and making it a good competitor for the MacBook 11 or even the 13-inch MacBook Air, even though those are full laptops instead of tablet and laptop hybrids). The processor is a dual-core chip clocked at 2.2GHz, and the TabPro S comes with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB/256 GB SSD. Two 5-megapixel cameras handle imaging on the front and back.

The TabPro S has a 5,200 mAh battery inside, and Samsung says the 2-in-1 tablet can offer up to 10.5 hours of battery life. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC and Bluetooth 4.1 – a separate adapter will be sold for adding HDMI, USB Type C, and a regular USB port, in addition to a Bluetooth-enabled stylus. All of the hardware is packed inside a body that weighs 693 grams (696 g on the LTE variant). The tablet is extremely thin as well, with only 6.3 mm thickness.

The Galaxy TabPro S is an interesting device – not just for the fact that it is called Galaxy but doesn’t run Android. Traits like the Super AMOLED display, fast connectivity and Windows 10 make it a nice tablet and laptop hybrid that could do well provided it is priced right. Samsung isn’t saying anything about pricing yet, but the TabPro S will be available globally starting February 2016.

Galaxy TabPro S specifications:

OS Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro
Network LTE Cat.6 **
AP 6th Gen. Intel Core M processor (Dual Core 2.2GHz)
Display 12” 2160×1440 Super AMOLED
Camera 5MP AF(Rear), 5MP (Front)
Video MP4,3GP,WMV,ASF,AVI,MKV

Memory 4GB(RAM), 128GB/ 256GB SSD

Samsung has launched a handful of Windows-powered products at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016. If you didn’t quite like the Windows 10-powered Galaxy TabPRO S perhaps the company’s new Notebook 9 laptops will be more to your liking. They are available in 13.3-inch and 15-inch sizes with both having a full HD 1080p LCD display and the choice of 6th generation Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processors so performance should be right up there with the best of them.

These notebooks are fashioned out of magnesium, they’re sturdy and yet lightweight to ensure easy portability, with Samsung promising all day battery life. One significant difference between the two models is that the 13.3-inch Notebook 9 doesn’t feature a USB Type-C port whereas the 15-inch model does, both of them have two USB 3.0 ports. Salient features also include:

  • Ultra-light: Samsung Notebook 9 series offers ultra-portability, with the world lightest 13.3-inch Notebook 9 weighing less than 1 kilogram, offering ultimate ease and convenience when on-the-go.
  • Vivid and Bright Display: The full-HD display provides superior brightness with a wide angle and low-reflective screen for a comfortable viewing experience from a variety of positions.
  • Extended Battery Life: The 15-inch Notebook 9 provides battery life for up to 12 hours, and the Quick Charging feature enables users to fully charge in just 20 minutes. The 13.3-inch Notebook 9 offers up to 10 hours of battery life on one charge.
  • Enhanced Security: The new security feature Security CAM allows users to take and send photos through an equipped camera to a pre-registered email in case of theft. The Pattern Log-in, Secret Screen, and Record Block features help users protect private files and information.
  • Seamless Productivity: Samsung Link 2.0 and SideSync 4.0 let users access shareable content more easily and efficiently. Also, the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certified ergonomic keyboard provides enhanced comfort and accuracy.

The new notebooks will be available in Iron Silver and Modern Pink colors in select markets starting early 2016, pricing will vary by market.

Samsung is slowly but surely expanding its mobile payments service to more markets across the globe, during its keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 today the company confirmed that Samsung Pay will go live in Australia, Singapore and Brazil soon. This is in addition to the Samsung Pay roll out that has already been confirmed by the company for China, Spain and the United Kingdom.

We did report exclusively that Samsung Pay will be live in China by Q1 2016 and that was confirmed only recently. Today Samsung has only revealed that Australia, Singapore and Brazil are the next markets to receive Samsung Pay though it hasn’t said when the service will go live in these markets. Additional details will most certainly be revealed by the company’s local arms in those countries when the time is right.

Samsung confirms iOS support for the Gear S2 coming later this year

$

Last month we exclusively reported that Samsung was working on a Gear Manager app for iOS which meant that iOS support might be added to the Gear S2 at some point in the future. The company didn’t confirm anything back then but it never really denied the possibility of its best smartwatch yet working with an iOS device. Today it has confirmed that iOS support for the Gear S2 is coming later this year.

Samsung mentioned this in passing during its keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016, it didn’t say when iOS support will arrive, and which features will be supported. Simply put, the Gear S2 will be compatible with iOS devices later this year, however, some features like Samsung Pay will require the smartwatch to be hooked up with a Samsung handset. Hopefully, the company will provide additional details about this as many Gear S2 owners have been anxious to find out when this is going to happen.

Samsung provides earnings guidance for Q4 2015

$

Analysts had predicted that Samsung wouldn’t be able to match or go beyond the operating profit it showed in Q3 2015 and their prediction has turned out to be true. Samsung has now provided its official earnings guidance for the fourth quarter of 2015, it expects to rake in about 6.1 trillion Korean won ($5.1 billion) in consolidated operating profit against 53 trillion Korean won ($44 billion) in consolidated sales.

The figures represent a 15% increase in profit year-over-year, since Samsung didn’t have a particularly nice run in Q4 2014, but also represent a 7.5% when compared to the operating profit it posted in the previous quarter. Even though the company is ready to put 2015 behind it, it’s already being very cautious about 2016, with co-CEO Kwon Oh-hyun telling employees that global growth is going to remain a concern for Samsung throughout this year. Samsung is going to reveal the full figures that show precisely how it did in the fourth quarter of 2015 by the end of this month.

There’s always a lot of information coming out during CES week so it’s quite usual for things to get buried, but Samsung wants to make sure that you’re aware of the fact that it has launched a new Windows 10-powered tablet called the Galaxy TabPro S. It’s a 12-inch premium tablet that’s powered by the latest iteration of Windows and is actually quite similar to Microsoft’s Surface tablet-laptop hybrids. What’s better than creating colorful infographics to detail exactly what your product is capable of doing and that’s precisely what Samsung has done so that you don’t forget to consider the Galaxy TabPro S when you’re in the market for a new tablet.

‘Future TV Zone’ at Samsung’s CES 2016 booth show some of the company’s most forward thinking TV concepts

$

Samsung is a big player in the TV industry and every year at the Consumer Electronics Show it comes out with a new lineup that’s even better than the previous one. It goes without saying that the company wants to remain a big player in this market and to make that happen it needs to continuously innovate, to show that’s quite capable of doing that Samsung has installed a “Future TV Zone” at its CES 2016 booth where it’s showcasing some of the most forward-thinking TV concepts it has ever produced.

Future TV Zone is focused around modular display technology that allows multiple screens in various shaps and sizes to combine and create an entirely customizable TV based on the user’s lifestyle and the content they’re watching. Once concept features the world’s largest SUHD TV, it’s a 170-inch display with Modular technology, providing the ultimate life-sized video experience as it gives viewers the illusion of actually being inside the video. The transformable TV is able to change its shape based on the content being displayed so it can easily adapt to provide the best viewing experience for a high action movie, a big sports event or even the news. It can easily switch between 16:9 and 21:9 screen ratio by splitting the screen into two parts and reassembling on the sides.

CES 2016 visitors can check out these concepts in person at Samsung’s booth from January 6-9 at Booth #11906, in Tech East, LVCC, Central Hall. For all of you who aren’t in Las Vegas, Samsung has a posted a video online.

Analysts predict Samsung will launch a foldable smartphone by the end of this year

$
0
0

We exclusively reported early last year that Samsung is working on its first smartphone with a foldable display, codenamed Project Valley, it was in extremely early stages of development at that time. A couple of months back we had yet another exclusive report about the Project Valley smartphone, we revealed the countries that it will initially be launched in. It was rumored previously that the foldable smartphone could be announced in January 2016 but with Samsung’s CES 2016 announcements done and dusted with, it seems highly unlikely that Project Valley will be out this month.

There does appear to be consensus though that a foldable smartphone from Samsung is on the way, even if nobody knows when it’s really going to be revealed HSBC analysts are predicting that Samsung is going to launch it in the second half of this year. They believe that Samsung is most likely going to be the first company to come out with a foldable smartphone and that one of the reasons it’s doing that is to add a significant degree of product differentiation. None of its rivals have a similar product out yet so for a company that’s struggling to maintain momentum in the smartphone market, which is reflecting on its balance sheet, a completely new and unique product that may even allow it to capture market share in both tablet and smartphone markets just might help the company’s fortunes.

If you have money to blow, buy this thousand Euro watch face for the Gear S2

$
0
0

There’s really no shortage of watch faces that you can get free for the Gear S2, paid options are available as well, so developers can create some really great options and then sell them to earn a bit of money on the side. You wouldn’t expect them to cost more than a couple of Euro and that’s really how much they usually cost, but if you have money to blow then this thousand Euro Gear S2 watch face is just perfect for you. Never mind the fact that it’s absolute insanity to sell a watch face for 922.60 Euro, even more so to actually purchase it, for that amount of money you can buy like three Gear S2 smartwatches or even jewelry that has actual diamonds in it. So what makes this watch face so expensive? Well the seller points out the fact that “Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend,” wise words by Theophrastus, who was Aristotle’s successor in the Peripatetic school. So that’s like half the value right there, and it’s basically a huge virtual diamond that’s rotated 6 degrees per second, it does nothing else. If you look closely you can see that it’s not the easiest of watch faces to read if you’re in a hurry to check the time. For that kind of money you can actually buy a watch with some real diamonds in it from a respectable Swiss watch maker or you can just buy three Gear S2 smartwatches, spending it on literally anything other than this preposterous proposition would make much more sense.

Mobile Fun lists official Galaxy S7 and S7 edge accessories ahead of Samsung Unpacked

$

There have been a lot of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge leaks based on cases for the two devices ahead of launch. Until now, we had only seen these cases in the form of unofficial reveals by case makers and various sources, but UK retailer has changed by officially listing numerous accessories for the S7 and its curved variant.

We had exclusively said Samsung would launch at least four cases for the Galaxy S7, but Mobile Fun’s list adds three more to the mix: an LED cover, a backpack cover, and something called a Guard cover. The LED cover is something we have seen from Samsung with devices like the Galaxy Note 4, but the guard cover and backpack are new – it’s hard to guess what the former is, but the latter could be a case with a battery inside. The rest of the accessories are pretty standard fare, including the new keyboard case that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+.

The cases are listed in black, gold, silver and white, so we suppose these are the color options the devices themselves will be offered in (hopefully, Samsung will make them all available in every market instead of limiting consumers to one or two choices). Mobile Fun oddly says the cases are due in two months, but that is most likely a tentative date that will change once the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge go official in February. As expected, none of the case listings are accompanied by images.

S-Patch wearable prototype based on Samsung’s Bio Processor showcased at CES

$

0

Samsung had announced a couple of months ago that it has developed a Bio Processor which would improve health tracking features in wearable devices. Samsung hoped that other brands would use its new chip in their activity and fitness trackers. Now, the company has showcased a prototype wearable device during CES 2016 that utilizes the Bio Processor.

The prototype, which is currently named S-Patch, was showcased by Samsung on the stage during its press conference in the ongoing tech expo. The device has inbuilt memory and Bluetooth connectivity. A user needs to attach it onto their chest so that it can read the heart rate in real-time. The data can be viewed inside an app on a connected smartphone or tablet.

The activity and fitness-related data can then be shared with a doctor or a trainer in real-time. Samsung claims that doctors can detect life-threatening health issues much before they hit the patient. The South Korean electronics giant is already working with multiple brands to see how a Bio Processor can improve health tracking.

Samsung trademarks Gear 360, could be a VR camera

$
0
0

A trademark application filed recently in Samsung’s home country suggests the launch of a 360 degree VR camera might be approaching. In South Korea, Samsung filed for protection of the name Gear 360. The application mentions photography and cameras as primary product categories, suggesting we might be looking at the name of a 360 degree camera. Such a camera of course would make an interesting companion to Samsung’s recent endeavors in the lands of virtual reality with its Gear VR headsets.

Late 2014 Samsung already showcased its Project Beyond, which is exactly what the Gear 360 seems to be: a VR camera for the Gear VR. Whether a launch is imminent remains to be seen, but trademark applications are often filed to products almost ready for release, so we just might see it make an appearance in the coming weeks or at the Mobile World Congress, at the end of February.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 Keyboard Cover is the perfect solution to the BlackBerry Priv and Vienna keyboard issues

BlackBerry’s back (you may or may not have heard), and the company’s first Android smartphone, called the “BlackBerry Priv,” features the tried-and-true physical keyboard that made the company famous once upon a time. Yes, before the era of virtual, on-screen keyboards (and even in these days), there are still customers who want a keyboard that doesn’t force them to deal with autocorrect. The Priv has a rather strange name (even “BlackBerry Secret” or “BlackBerry Disguise” would’ve been better name choices; how about “BlackBerry Venice,” the codename for the Priv?), but there’s no denying that the Priv does have a commendable look and a bold entrance into the Android world. BlackBerry’s nostalgic brand name doesn’t hurt it, either.

At the same time, however, there’s one problem I foresee with the BlackBerry Priv: the nature of the physical keyboard. It’s a slide-out one, a keyboard that was designed this way to allow customers to use the keyboard when they need it, “slide it away” (like a PC keyboard) when they don’t. The design seems to have its own appeal: give customers the option to “tuck away the keyboard,” and they’ll gladly thank you for it. This design, however, comes with a risk: what happens if the physical keyboard gets jammed, or slides out but suddenly “decides” it no longer wants to slide back in place? The hardware keyboard is wonderful, but for how long? It all depends on how much you use it, of course, but it’s as sure as the sun will rise one day and the rain will fall the next that you’ll have to eventually visit a repair shop or a retail store near you to fix it at some point.

While we’ve been hearing about the success of the first Android BlackBerry, a second Android BlackBerry is on the way. Codenamed “BlackBerry Vienna” (another codename that I wish didn’t go to the trash bin), this second Android BlackBerry has a physical keyboard that is no longer a slider but part of the design itself. In other words, it’s an always-present keyboard that will force you to either love or hate the design. While the BlackBerry Vienna doesn’t look to have the same problem as the slide-out keyboard on the Priv, it, too, faces a problem: the whim of consumers. There are some nostalgic, BlackBerry faithful who will proudly rock the physical keyboard, but there are many consumers who will pass up BlackBerry’s Android devices because of it. Some people don’t view the physical keyboard as “sexy”; I think productivity is sexy, but that’s me.

In walks Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 Keyboard Cover. It’s the perfect solution to the BlackBerry Priv and the Vienna because it allows you to be productive when you need to be, and stylish and modern when you want to be. First, the Galaxy Note 5 Keyboard Cover provides protection for your device. In a world where some don’t mind walking around with their device freed from a protective case of some kind, the Galaxy Note 5 Keyboard Cover allows you to have protection for your device. Next, the Keyboard Cover allows you to have a keyboard when you need it. While the Priv’s keyboard is something you have to slide out and in, you need only detach the keyboard portion from the cover and place it at the bottom of your Note 5 to get typing. Once you’re done, detach it and slap it on the back of your Note 5 to maintain the sleek and stylish look you want. You don’t need to slide the keyboard in or out and worry about whether or not it’ll last with the Galaxy Note 5 Keyboard Cover, as you do with the BlackBerry Priv. You don’t need to worry about having to showcase a phone with the keyboard permanently attached to the bottom of the phone when you have Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and the Keyboard Cover.

With Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 Keyboard Cover, you get benefits in three areas: 1) protection for your Note 5; 2) productivity with writing emails, texts, typing memos, etc.; and 3) style. None of these are compromised with the Galaxy Note 5 Keyboard Cover – and you’ll spend a lot more time away from the repair shop, giving you more time with your device (that’s the point of buying it in the first place, right?).

BlackBerry took some small inspiration from Samsung with its dual-curve edges, and Samsung took some small inspiration from BlackBerry with the Keyboard Cover. However, Samsung turned it up a notch: instead of going with a physical keyboard in design that would either 1) annoy some customers or 2) prove to break and be a repair headache later on, the Korean giant decided to bring protection, productivity, and style into a Keyboard Cover alongside of the productivity and style of the Galaxy Note 5. Some customers will settle for the productivity, some want productivity and protection, and some want protection, productivity, and style. I want all three.

Samsung bags more than one hundred awards at CES 2016

Samsung Electronics has a lot to be proud of after earning over 100 awards at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016. Some of the key areas where Samsung made its presence felt this year include Home Entertainment, Home Appliances, Mobile and the Internet of Things which Samsung is going to put a heavy emphasis on this year. It already became clear weeks ago that Samsung would capture most of the attention at CES 2016 after its unreleased Smart TV got the Best of Innovation Award, only to be followed by the UHD Alliance Premium Certification to the entire 2016 SUHD lineup.

Here’s what Gregory Lee, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics North America had to say about the future of Samsung:

Samsung continuously strives to provide consumers with innovations that matter to help them connect their busy lives with their friends, family, co-workers and even their appliances in meaningful ways

Among the winning products for Samsung at CES 2016 we can see the KS9500 Series Curved SUHD TV, Samsung’s 4-door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub and the Galaxy TabPro S. This tablet actually gathered quite some awards like TechRadar’s Best of CES award, Engadget’s Best of CES finalist and many others.

What are your thoughts on Samsung’s CES 2016 attendance this year?

Verizon is updating the Galaxy Note 4 to Android 5.1.1

$

The Galaxy Note 5 has been out in the market for more than four months now, and you would think the Note 5 would be matching its successor on software version till now. Certainly, Galaxy Note 4 users have been reaping the benefits of Android 5.1.1 for some time, and so have users of the device on three major US carriers – AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Well, Verizon is finally jumping on the bandwagon and is starting to update the Note 4 to Android 5.1.1 as well.

Featuring build number N910VVRU2BOK3, the update brings support for Android for Work, upgrades to Samsung KNOX (KNOX is what Android for Work is based on), and removes the preloaded Amazon app and widgets. Verizon doesn’t mention any other changes, but the update should include inherent 5.1.1 goodies, including improved stability, battery fixes and security upgrades. Even if it doesn’t, well, users of the last Galaxy Note flagship to offer removable battery and expandable storage should be happy they can at least flaunt the latest version of Android Lollipop in front of their friends.

The update should be hitting your Galaxy Note 4 in the form of a notification in the status bar. In case it hasn’t shown up yet, take a trip to the Settings » About device » Software update menu and check for it manually. In either case, it shouldn’t be long before Android 5.1.1 comes calling on your phone, and you can let us know once it does by leaving a comment below.

Oh, and don’t ask anything about Android 6.0 for the Note 4. If we’re lucky, Samsung will bring Marshmallow to the device before the second half of this year, even though the company seems to be testing it in full force already.

The Galaxy Note 5′s Do Not Disturb mode may be buggy with latest update

Samsung has pushed out quite a few updates to the Galaxy Note 5 since its launch, and the latest one seems to have introduced a bug that doesn’t let the Do Not Disturb mode turn on as scheduled. I’ve seen it bug out twice and not turn on at the scheduled time.

This hasn’t happened before, and it’s possible the latest update introduced the bug. I managed to fix it by manually turning Do Not Disturb on and off and also toggling the ‘Turn on as scheduled’ to off and back on again. It’s also possible this isn’t related to the latest update and could be a general glitch in the software that won’t happen again, but it’s something that certainly managed to disturb me in the wee hours of the night.

Have you faced a similar issue on your Galaxy Note 5, or even the Galaxy S6 edge+ which shares its software with the Note 5? Let us know if you have by leaving a comment down below.

Galaxy S6 and S6 edge get NFC-enabled QWERTY keyboard case from One2Touch

The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ come with an official keyboard cover from Samsung, but this case isn’t available for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. If you’re looking for an alternative, One2Touch – a company specializing in NFC solutions – has released a keyboard case for the original S6 lineup. This case is a regular flip case that incorporates a full QWERTY keyboard on the flap that covers the screen.

The case is called SlimType, and the keyboard gets laid out in landscape mode when the case is open. In addition to all the letters of the alphabet, the keyboard has numerous alternate functions that can be accessed using the Function key and also has a key dedicated to emoji. The case has NFC, so you can start pairing it to your S6 or S6 edge as soon as you put the phone inside (making the back of the phone and the NFC chip in the case come together, which is what is needed to initiate the connection.)

Oddly, One2Touch says the SlimType case doesn’t need batteries, which might be because NFC-enabled devices use very low power and the keyboard is, after all, simply a device for text input. Of course, the biggest concern is whether it will be easy to type on a QWERTY keyboard that’s not very wide, and also the fact that you won’t be able to keep the device and keyboard in your hand and will need to lay down your phone on a flat surface to be able to type.

It’s an interesting case though, and some folks are likely to find some use for the thing. The SlimType is available for pre-order from One2Touch’s website in Black Sapphire, Cherry Red and White Pearly color options. A price isn’t mentioned, though Android Authority says the SlimType case will cost $39 for a limited time after launch.
