Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ trumps every other smartphone in mobile photography performance

$

The flagships that Samsung released this year had great cameras, no wonder DxOMark found that the Galaxy S6 edge really had the “edge” over the competition when it came to mobile photography performance. The same company, well known for its photography and videography testing, has put the Galaxy S6 edge+ through its paces and gave it the best score on its database which means that the phablet is now tied in first place with the Sony Xperia Z5. The Galaxy S6 edge sits in second place on the list with the Galaxy Note 5 for company.

DxOMark found during its tests that the Galaxy S6 edge+ provides great exposures in all lighting conditions, excellent white balance and color reproduction, high levels of detail preservation in bright light and low light conditions as well as superior flash and autofocus performance. It goes so far as to say that the Galaxy S6 edge+ has “one of the best camcorder available on a smartphone,” scoring it 87/100 for photography and 85/100 for videography. It’s not like the camera on this smartphone needed another vote of confidence, even award-winning photographers have put it to the test and found it to be spectacular, but Samsung wouldn’t mind having the Galaxy S6 edge+ on top of DxOMark‘s list of the best performing smartphones in mobile photography.

Samsung might produce a separate Exynos 8870 chip to sell to other smartphone manufacturers

There’s new information circulating in the media at the moment, according to which Samsung is going to be producing a separate Exynos 8870 chipset which is meant to be sold to other handset manufacturers such as Meizu (a company that has a history of using Samsung’s latest Exynos chips in its handsets). This is probably a better processor than the one used in devices like the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy Note 5 (the Exynos 7420). While the Exynos 8870 is predicted to be a high-end chip, it’s estimated that it will have a lower clock speed than the Exynos 8890.

We could see the upcoming Meizu PRO 6 and the Meizu PRO 6 mini as the first devices to feature the Exynos 8870, and more companies are expected to join in on this deal. BlackBerry was also rumored to be testing an Exynos 7420 chip in their handsets about a month ago, and given that the company wants to continue its business in 2016 it’s likely that it will partner up with Samsung.

Considering that the Exynos 8870 is basically just a slightly downgraded version of the Exynos 8890 it should be extremely good and it could open the way for some fantastic devices with good battery life. This is going to give Qualcomm some serious competition and we can’t wait to see how well these chipsets perform.

Samsung to mass produce 14 nm flat NAND flash in 2016

$

Samsung Electronics recently finished the development process of a 14 nanometer (nm) flat NAND flash and plans to mass produce it in the first half of 2016. The South Korean giant will be introducing this new memory to the market at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), which will take place in San Francisco on the 31st of January.

One of the big advantages of the 14 nm flat NAND flash is a high efficiency in production costs. Another upside is the fact that this type of memory will be far more efficient in reading and writing, and it will reduce errors during data input/output. This is a cornerstone of innovation as experts claim that Samsung has broken through an unbreakable barrier. If you remember, there was a rumor six months ago according to which Samsung would provide NAND flash memory to the next generation iPhone so the fact that the tech company is going to start mass producing this 14 nm flash memory means that it could be trying to secure various deals in the general handset industry too.

A transparent display would fix a smartwatch’s fundamental problem

$

For Christmas this year, to my surprise I was given an actual watch by my girlfriend. Her reason? That I cannot wear a smartwatch for occasions such as a business meeting or when you go out for dinner. This led me to think over the state of smartwatches these days.

At the time of writing this, I have been using a Gear S2 classic with a metal band for over three weeks, and I cannot really complain about its looks. But why did my girlfriend gift me a real watch instead of something else? The idea behind it is quite simple. A watch can be seen as a status symbol and it is always on to tell you the time; you always see the face of the watch and all its beauty. Yes, this is possible with the always-on mode on the Gear S2 and any other smartwatch in existence today.

However, you only see the hands (or the numbers, if you’re using a digital clock) in order to save battery power. A watch should normally be visible to everyone – you should be proud of wearing your watch, otherwise it doesn’t really make any sense. If you want to know the time, you should be able to see it directly and at all times without issues, which isn’t the case even with the always-on mode on smartwatches.

The solution for this is rather easy – a transparent circular screen would solve these problems. To be honest, we would have expected something like this from Apple, a company many find to be the trendsetters in the mobile technology space. Yet, the Apple Watch has no transparent display, though it did have a nice interface that got Samsung thinking and got them working on the Gear S2.

In fact, Samsung is rather close to a perfect smartwatch. The Gear S2 does lack many apps but in terms of usability and appearance, the Gear S2 classic is a great product on the market today. But it would be great if the Korean manufacturer could come out with a Gear watch that has a transparent screen that lights up when you receive a notification. This watch could sell a lot compared to existing Samsung smartwatches that we’ve seen until now.

But what about watch faces? Yes, they can unfortunately only be seen when the screen is on, but what strikes me is that most users will only use a single watch face after a while, either because they like it a lot or they get bored of changing it all the time. But then again, would Tag Heuer be happy if they see someone standing with a Rolex watch face on their Tag Heuer smartwatch? Would Nike be happy if people wear Adidas shoes with their logo on them?

The Gear S2 is a thing of beauty, yet I do not wear it to special occasions anymore. Not because the Gear S2 isn’t suitable, but because you have a better choice. Namely, the traditional watch.

P.S.: Speaking of Rolex, Rolex and its rotary bezel would actually go along well with Samsung’s latest smartwatch as they more or less use the same technique. The only problem I see now is the hardware on a smartwatch (like the battery), but luckily they are working on it already.

This is how much the Galaxy A9 might cost in China

$

Less than a week ago Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A9, it’s the most high-end smartphone in the company’s Galaxy A lineup which was also recently refreshed. At that time it was only confirmed that the handset would be released in China and no information about pricing was provided, now it appears that the pricing for the Galaxy A9 has surfaced on Weibo.

If the Weibo post is believed then the Galaxy A9 might cost 3199 yuan, roughly $490, when it’s released soon in China. The price does make sense considering everything customers get for their money, the Galaxy A9 has a 6-inch full HD Super AMOLED display with 2.5D curved glass, a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There’s also a 13-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera, a 4,000mAh non-removable battery, microSD card slot and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Samsung is still yet to confirm when it’s going to release this handset in China and when or if it’s ever going to be released in any other market.

The app enables users to quickly book flights, find best seats, locate airport gate and even track flights for free, it’s even capable of booking hotels at the destination or airport if it’s being used on a smartphone. Quicket will soon be landing on the Gear S2 making it much easier for frequent flyers who wear the Gear S2 to keep track of their flights effortlessly.

The upcoming app has been made from the ground up for the Gear S2, it will allow users to find flights, view flight status, track timelines and get gate information. For advanced features they’ll still have to use Quicket on their smartphones. No release date has been announced yet for Quicket but it shouldn’t take too long for this app to land on the Gear S2.

Samsung’s 2016 SUHDs will come with SmartThings hubs

Samsung has announced that all 2016 SUHD TVs will come equipped with SmartThings hubs. What this means is that you will be able to use your smart TV to connect to other SmartThings-compatible devices in your household through a single user interface. You can connect your lights for example, or your smartphone, or pretty much everything else through the Internet of Things network.

An interesting thing about the SmartThings hub is that it is region activated, this means that it will initially only be available in certain regions of the world, regardless of your SUHD model, and as Samsung will expand to other countries the SmartThings hub will be activated. There will be around 200 SmartThings-compatible products for the tech consumer to choose from however Samsung hasn’t detailed what they’re about, except that they will be IoT compatible.

The South Korean manufacturer will be focusing its CES 2016 efforts on the Internet of Things where it will probably reveal its new lineup of devices as well as the Series 9 notebooks. Samsung’s unannounced Smart TV has already received the CES 2016 Best of innovation award in the Accessible Tech category so we have some very high expectations from the company next year.

[Poll] What was your favorite Samsung Galaxy flagship in 2015?

$

0

It was an interesting year for Samsung, an year that will soon lead into the next one. The company launched four flagship smartphones in 2015 – the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge at the beginning of the year, and the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ in August. In addition to launching two additional flagship phones, Samsung also stepped into the realm of truly premium smartphones, with all of the aforementioned phones featuring impeccable glass and metal bodies that are heads and shoulders above the plastic builds of yesteryear Galaxy devices.

It wasn’t just the design where Samsung’s flagships excelled. They are fast (thanks to the Exynos 7420 SoC under the hood), have amazing displays, a lightning quick and accurate fingerprint sensor, and one of the best cameras in the smartphone game. The software was given a major overhaul as well – TouchWiz is faster and more optimized than ever before, and it also looks better with the ability for users to switch to different themes.

s6-edge-review-1

Of course, there were some aspects of these devices that alienated long-time fans of Galaxy smartphones. A removable battery was given the boot, and Samsung also opted for smaller batteries compared to last year (though users can take advantage of inbuilt wireless and fast charging). Even worse, none of the flagships this year come with a microSD slot, and with the Note 5 and S6 edge+, Samsung took away the 128GB model as well.

All in all though, the top-of-the-line Galaxy handsets in 2015 were great all things considered. The Galaxy Note 5 is our absolute favorite, and the Galaxy S6 edge+ comes a close second in terms of offering everything a consumer would want. The Galaxy S6 edge took the crown for being the most beautiful phone from the Korean giant, and the Galaxy S6 was a nice high-quality phone for the general consumer, packing all the amazing features inside a regular 5.1-inch display.

What do you think? Which of the four Galaxy flagships was your favorite? You know the drill – let us know by selecting an option down below, and leave a comment with your thoughts on the device you liked the most!

Samsung today announced a new security solution for its Tizen-powered smart TVs, the comprehensive three-layer solution is called GAIA and it will be available on the entire 2016 line up of Samsung smart TVs. GAIA promises protection across all areas of the smart TV ecosystem including but not limited to software, services and hardware security.

“GAIA is a security solution that will give Samsung customers security and peace of mind now and in the future,” said Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics adding that “protecting consumers’ personal information is of the utmost importance to Samsung, both in terms of the company’s values and what’s needed for the continued growth and success of the IoT ecosystem.”

GAIA has a Secure Zone which is a virtual barrier that creates a secure space to protect core service operations. To protect consumers’ personal information such as credit card information or password it allows for virtual data input via a secure Keypad/Number Pad. Security is also promised by strengthening hardware, with Tizen OS being divided into two main parts which include the main and the security space, data for each space is then secured separately. The public key used for verifying personal information is included in the hardware chip itself. Samsung says that 2016 is going to be the year that the TV becomes the center for Internet of Things, no wonder the 2016 smart TVs will also double as SmartThings hubs, GAIA will go a long way in making sure that the end user experience remains safe and secure.

Samsung has confirmed today that for the first time ever it’s going to showcase three Creative Lab (C-Lab) projects at CES 2016. C-Lab is one of Samsung’s innovation programs that enables the company’s employees to nurture their own creative business ideas. The projects that will be showcased at CES 2016 include WELT – which is a healthcare belt that lets people manage their waist size by measuring daily habits and behaviors, a hand-motion controller for mobile VR devices called rink and TipTalk – a new user experience which allows users to hear sounds transmitted through their own body.

C-Lab was founded back in 2012 and has already supported more than 100 projects initiated by Samsung employees. 70 of these projects have already been completed while about 40 are being further developed by Samsung’s business units. in 2015 nine projects were identified as having a particularly high potential for success, Samsung has helped those teams launch full-fledged external startups. WELT, rink, and TipTalk will be demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas early next month.

LG and Samsung to supply OLED displays for upcoming iPhones

$

Word on the street in Korea has it that LG and Samsung are just days away from signing an agreement with Apple to supply OLED displays for the ninth generation iPhone. This won’t be the first time the three companies have worked together, though. As it stands, both LG and Samsung are the primary manufacturers of the 1.3- and 1.5-inch panels used on the Apple Watch.

In an effort to meet Apple’s demand of OLEDs, it’s believed that LG and Samsung will spend a combined $12.8 billion to revamp their production lines. LG will repurpose its existing manufacturing plants to produce its share of panels, which should save it some money in the long run. It will also introduce a sixth-generation production technique that has yet to be tested in order to process a greater yield.

Seeing as LG has to make several alterations to its plants to manufacture the goods, Samsung will be awarded 30% more orders than LG as it has the facilities to start mass-producing the displays immediately. Discussions are currently underway with Apple to construct approximately 90,000 sheets per month for 2-to-3 years.

The ever-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the screens themselves will be ready to hit the market in early 2019, which means that they will make their debut appearance on the iPhone 9 and not the iPhone 8 as previously believed. Although, many other analysts disagree with Kuo and suggest that the panels will roll off the line in 2018 just in time for the iPhone 8′s release.

Apart from revealing new Series 9 laptops, Samsung has yet another surprise for consumers at CES 2016. The South Korean electronics giant is set to showcase an upgraded version of Game Service for its Smart TVs, which brings forth over 400 streaming games and around 100 downloadable games.

Samsung’s high-quality displays will make the Game Service a wonderful experience for its customers. Some of the games included in the upgraded Game Service are Assassin’s Creed III, Batman: Arkham Origins and The LEGO Movie Videogame. Samsung’s upgraded Game Service has something in store for everyone from every genre: sports, first person shooter, board games and more.

Here’s a recent statement on the subject from Youngchan Kim, Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics:

The new Smart TV gaming service is just one feature of a TV that offers all-round entertainment. Our game offering will continue to expand, as Samsung partners with publishers of popular games.

[iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UgxhRS_Vk_c" width="853" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"]

Samsung Smart TV consumers will also have a very wide range of streaming options such as The PlayStation Now Service, which was launched for Samsung TVs earlier this year, will be improved in 2016 with more games. Another popular choice is GameFly, which is available in 21 countries and will have over 100 console game titles available on Samsung Smart TVs in 2016.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge Android 6.0 Marshmallow in pictures!

$

0

Samsung surprised us all by launching a beta for Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge last week. Samsung is no longer accepting new participants for the beta, but we’ve been running Android 6.0 on our S6 and S6 edge and have a lot of images to show you how the latest version of the operating system looks on the two devices.

Android 6.0 brings many changes to the interface. The status bar and quick toggles menus are now fully white instead of blue, the power menu has been redesigned (quite poorly, we might add), and a few app icons have been changed as well. If you like changing themes on your phone all the time, you can now download new ones based on their color palette, which is a nice touch that should help you narrow down the number of themes you have to go through when finding a new one.

In terms of features, the regular Marshmallow features like Google Now on Tap and more advanced app permissions are included. For photography buffs, the Pro mode now has a shutter speed option, which has been a long time coming for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge users. All in all, with the interface changes and the Android 6.0 features, this is turning out to be quite a notable update.

Well, enough talk! Check Marshmallow in action on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge below, and let us know what you think down in the comments.

Galaxy Note 5 is third on DxOMark’s mobile photography performance rankings

Galaxy Note 5 just got a very good rating on the latest DxOMark test where it was placed on the third spot in the rankings. The latest device in the Note lineup got an overall score of 85 and it showed a very promising result in the DxOMark Mobile Photo section. It got a score of 87/100 with the highest score in exposure/contrast and texture. In the DxOMark Mobile Video category, the Galaxy Note 5 got 84 points with an emphasis on noise and artifacts.

It seems that the Galaxy Note 5′s camera is doing pretty well regardless of lighting conditions and this is quite an achievement though it isn’t the first one for Samsung. The South Korean giant has gotten extremely high scores in the past with the Galaxy S5 through DxOMark, having been declared the best smartphone camera at the time.

Here’s what to do if you can’t remember the lock screen password for your Samsung smartphone

So you’ve just got your hands on a shiny new Samsung smartphone, blasted through the setup process, and in the heat of the moment forgotten your password for the lock screen. What do you do? First thing’s first, don’t panic. Tons of people have been in the exact same position before, and plenty more will follow in the future. That’s why Samsung (and Android itself) has made it extremely easy to reset your passcode and regain access to your phone.

Method 1: Unlock using your Google Account

  1. If you’ve entered an incorrect password more than 20 times, you will be prompted to enter your Google credentials. Simply input your email address and password, then head over to your Gmail inbox and confirm the login.
  2. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll have the facility to change your backup password. Ensure you change it to something memorable this time, though, as there is a cap on the amount of times you can reset your password using this method.

If, for whatever reason, you can’t authenticate your device using your Google Account, you will have to use Samsung’s Find My Mobile service. Full instructions on how to do this can be seen below.

Method 2: Unlock using Find My Mobile

  1. To unlock your handset using Samsung’s Find My Mobile platform, head over to its official website by clicking here.
  2. Log in using the Samsung account you created when you first got your hands on your smartphone. Of course, this requires that you would have logged in to a Samsung account instead of skipping it.
  3. Once on the dashboard, hit the button entitled Unlock my Device.
  4. Ensure that the phone is turned on and is connected to the Internet either via Wi-Fi or through an active data connection.
  5. Click OK to the pop-up that appears on the website.

Your phone will now communicate with Find my Mobile and after a few minutes should remotely unlock. Now you’re going to want to head into the device’s Settings and create a new password.

If you happen to run into any issues along the way, do be sure to let us know in the comments section below, and we’ll do our very best to help you out.

Reminder: All Samsung flagships launched in 2014 and later will get Marshmallow

Samsung launched a beta program for Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge last week, and we have been seeing a lot of comments from our readers about whether the Galaxy S5 or other Samsung flagships will be getting the Marshmallow update. We thought it would be a good idea to answer that question by reminding everyone that Samsung updates all its flagship devices to two major new versions of Android.

It’s a tradition the company has always followed, and every flagship since the original Galaxy S has gone from the version of Android they came with out of the box to two newer versions. For the Galaxy S5, that’s Android 6.0, as it came out with Android 4.4 KitKat and Lollipop has been its only big update until now. As we had revealed a couple of months earlier, work on Android 6.0 for the S5 has already started, and the same goes for the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. Variants of these devices, like the Galaxy S5 LTE-A or the Galaxy S5 or S6 Active, will also be in line for 6.0.

Basically, if you buy a Galaxy flagship, you can rest assured your device will see the two major versions of the OS that come out after the phone’s launch. Of course, there’s never any information on when Samsung will roll out an update, but any flagship launched after 2014 is sure to get at least Android 6.0 before their maker ceases major software support.

While you’re waiting, check out Marshmallow on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge here!

Some important tips to remember when taking photos: ISO should be configured as low as possible not exceeding 400 if possible, tweak shutter speed for better effects and don’t use zoom, flash or HDR. Don’t forget, stable hands make for great photos. Here’s to a great year, and more great devices from Samsung.
